Our environment isn’t feeling so good these days, there are issues with greenhouse gases, waste, water contamination, among other things. It can be a little discouraging to think about, to be quite honest. But if you’re committed to helping out our environment, we can start making a small difference by using eco-friendly products. Luckily, there is always an alternative to just about everything. Below are the top five killer products, and following them, the best alternatives to minimize their damage.
Disposable Paper Towels
Millions of paper towels are being used for a one time occasion and thrown away immediately afterward. Paper towels are designed to be very thick and can cause a lot of harm to the environment if not properly disposed of.
A hand towel, dish rag, or air dryer are greater eco-friendly alternatives. Instead of investing in just one or two, buy a pack of dish rags to have on hand in the kitchen, with their own personal hamper to put them in. This way you can get into the habit of washing and drying them to always have them on hand.
Parents who prefer to use disposable diapers spend a lot of money for the convenience. Although it does make it easier for parents to get through the night, disposing of about seven to eleven dirty diapers a day has a great effect on the ozone’s depletion while they decompose in trash landfills.
Using reusable cloth diapers will minimize the emit methane that is released into our atmosphere. They’re a bit of a hassle, but overall, they’re better for your baby and for the environment.
Disposable Cleaning Cloths / Baby Wipes
Disposable cleaning cloths are easily favorable by the majority because of its unique properties of imitating a wash without actually involving water or soap. These wipes are a one time use only. Many people that prefer using disposable wipes tend to go through thousands annually. These wipes are more deadly than paper towels because of its fabric-like texture, it will take longer to decompose. If not disposed properly, it could kill wildlife if consumed, drains could get clogged, and much more.
The alternative to this issue may not be ideal for many but could save lives. Reusable cloth or a microfiber cloth can be used to clean and or wipe for babies, and if you’re an adult who likes wet wipes, perhaps you can make use a bidet. Widely popular in Europe and Asia, with them you usually use less toilet paper, and feel just as clean as you would have with wet wipes.
Disposable Single-Use Razors
After these razors have fulfilled its purpose, millions end up in trash landfills every single day. Razors are cheaply made with non-recyclable material and cannot be reused. Razors can do serious damage if it ends up in the wrong place.
Getting an electric or reusable razor will do wonders for our natural world. However, if a disposable razor must be used, searching for a biodegradable one will be better.
Feminine Hygiene Products
Feminine hygiene products are number one on this list because it does the most damage to our ecosystem. Every single woman in every country uses some type of feminine hygiene product to get through her monthly visitor. Just in the United States alone, about 12 billion feminine hygiene products were used every single year. The products that are used by billions every month include menstrual pads, tampons, and pantie liners.
To reduce the use of these necessary products, look into buying more eco-friendly, organic tampons and pads that are plastic-free, with no harmful toxins or chlorine bleaches.
Change may not be the easiest thing to achieve all at one time but it needs to happen. Our environment is slowly decaying right before our eyes. If we do not start taking action today, our beautiful land will only rot faster.
