My son is a Princess, and I’m okay.

Today, at my son’s Head Start class, is “Dress as what you want to be when you grow up” day. They can dress as firemen, cops, super heroes or ANYTHING they want to be when they grow up. When asked what my son wanted to wear, he decided on a dress.

He has tried to wear a dress to school at least once a week, and I told him no. Today, he knew I can’t say no to it, it is kid’s choice day, and he wanted to wear a dress to school, so he wore a dress to school.

He is my son, I love him no matter what, I just worry for him. He wears dresses at home, quite often, and I don’t have an issue with it, but this will be the first time he gets to wear one outside of the house, and I am worried about the teasing.

I did talk to the teachers beforehand, I figured he would request the dress, so I wanted to see what they thought. They said it is perfectly fine and they will make sure no bullying happens, and thinks the other kids might find it funny, in the laughing with him way, not at him. Still, I was scared for him.

If you are sitting there wondering why he chose to wear a dress on a day that kids were suppose to dress according to what they wanted to be when they grew up, it is because he has often said that he wants to be a girl.

Time came for him to go school, and I dropped him off. One of his teachers was naming what each kid was when they came in and when it was his turn she said (without missing a beat) “And you’re a beautiful princess!” to which he replies “Nooooo….*giggles* I just a girl.”

He had a blast, he was so proud to wear his dress and my fears were for nothing. I guess that one child did mention something along the lines of “Liam is wearing a dress cause he’s a girl.” and the teacher put a stop to it quickly, and the children moved on with their day. I worried a lot, but it seems to have gone well. I decided to make a video of him when he got home from school, and I asked him how his day went. “Dood” (read “good”), he went on to say that he made Dinosaur Eggs in school and said he was a princess today. I asked him if he was a boy or a girl, and he answered that he was a boy. I was actually a little shocked there, because he usually says “girl.” He has even come out and said, without being asked, and without even being on the subject, “Mommy, I’m not a boy.”

Could this be a phase? Sure it can, and I secretly hope it is, and that he grows out of it. Not because I would love him any less if he was transgendered, but because I worry about him being bullied by other kids for being transgendered. No matter what happens, this is my child, and I am so proud to be his mother!

You can watch the video on my facebook page. Feel free to comment, share and like. If this helps even one other child to feel comfy with who they are, then we have succeeded.
